Are You Part of the Problem?

Thursday, March 21st, 2013

Problem?_or_Solution?

In the workplace, problems and challenges occur all the time. It’s always something … it’s either this or that.

Where will we put this?
Why can’t we find the inventory that the computer says exists?
Why are we out of stock for this standard item?
Why do we too often end up reacting instead of following a plan?

These challenges and problems are the reason that you were hired. Your job is to solve problems.

Unfortunately, some people come to work and only create more problems.

Are you part of the problem? Or are you part of the solution?

To achieve my goal of sharing the message of Gumption with every student in Montana, I’ll need to find a sponsor or sponsors.

Here are the main characteristics I’ll seek in my ideal sponsor partnership:

  • Education. First and foremost, all sponsors will have a strong focus and commitment toward education. They are open-minded to new ways of doing things. They believe that education is a lifelong activity. They know that only an educated person can live a truly free and creative life.
  • Montana. A love of and strong commitment to the state of Montana. Helping Montana will be at the core of our partnership. Both my partners and I believe in the Montana lifestyle, the outdoors, and the preservation of our way of life. I planted my flag in Montana in 2006. I imagine Montana being my primary home for the rest of my life. I love Montana.

100%/0% is a Better Choice

Thursday, December 13th, 2012

100Percent_0Percent

Here is why 50/50 is overrated when it comes to your thinking, actions, and interactions with others.

When you function in a 50/50 mindset, you spend a lot of time keeping score.
When you function in a 50/50 mindset, you spend a lot of time holding back.
When you function in a 50/50 mindset, you spend a lot of time judging the motives of others.

When you Function with Gumption, you take responsibility for three things:

  1. The way you think (Mindset)
  2. The way you act (Behavior)
  3. The way you interact with others (Relationships)

When you Function with Wellness Gumption, you take responsibility for these three areas:

  1. Your nutrition (what you eat, drink, and additional supplements)
  2. Your movement (exercise)
  3. Your rest (sleeping)

Gumption is all about taking responsibility.
Wellness Gumption is taking responsibility for your health and wellness.

Peace, Love & Gumption

Thursday, June 28th, 2012

Peace_Love_&_Gumption

The Sixties produced the Peace symbol.
The Sixties produced the Love movement.
The Sixties produced Rock ’n Roll.

I’ve decided to borrow the hippie phrase in a modified form – Gumption will replace Rock ’n Roll.

Why?

Peace, Love & Gumption simply describes the benefits one receives from living a gump-like life.

Here’s my thinking …

Three Invaluable Life Lessons I Learned From My Mother

With Mother’s Day approaching, I’d like to reflect on three invaluable life lessons I learned from my mother.

But first, I’ll mention that next month it will be eleven years since she left us. Last year, I reprinted the eulogy given at her funeral. I miss my mother. But I’m the person I am today because of these three very important life lessons that she lovingly and generously gave me: independence; making choices; and responsibility.

Thanks, Mom! I love you and miss you!

Short and Sweet … and to the Point

Thursday, March 15th, 2012

Are you trying to handle too much information?

Are you trying to handle too much information?

How do we effectively communicate our ideas in today’s world of information overload?

Has everyone become stricken by some degree of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)?

Or has the barrage of information that originally started sixty-plus years ago with television and commercials—and has now hyper-accelerated to our smart phones and tablet computers via websites, URLs, emails, and webinars—simply worn us all out? And let’s not forget the twenty-four hour news cycles with bloviating pundits yelling over each other in talking points and mindless clichés.

Here’s the good news.

I Thought I Was Tricking My Mother

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

And I thought I was fooling my mother … stupid is as stupid does!

And I thought I was fooling my mother … stupid is as stupid does!

When I was a boy attending elementary school, I’d fake an illness a few times a year so I could have a day off. I wasn’t really sick. But my loving mother would dutifully take my temperature, listen to my contrived coughs, and lovingly pat me on the forehead and tell me that she thought I was too sick to go to school.

YEAH! I tricked Mom and had a day off.

Years later, she told me she knew I wasn’t sick and she knew I was faking it. But she also said, “I knew you needed a day off.”

My last post correlated how patience and persistence, while seemingly opposites, are linked together by your goals.

Being both patient and persistent is required to achieve your dreams, goals, and/or objectives.

That said … is it possible to be too patient? Too persistent?

Absolutely.

The Common Link between Patience and Persistence

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

Patience:Perseverance-Chart.014

What is the one thing that connects being patient and being persistent?

Goals. And specifically … your goals.

A patient person focused on a goal doesn’t let setbacks, unforeseen challenges, or missed deadlines derail them from pursuing and achieving their dream. They may get frustrated, but they don’t give up. Patience is a friend and ally in overcoming life’s letdowns.

They are persistently patient.
