Today, I’m introducing the new and streamlined explanation of Gumption. I’ll call it Real Life Gumption or Gumption 2.0.
Real Life Gumption consists of only three principles:
Principle #1: Mindset: The way a person with Gumption thinks.
Principle #2: Moxie: The way a person with Gumption gets things done.
Principle #3: Graciousness: The way a person with Gumption interacts with others.
This is an exciting breakthrough in my thought leadership platform. I want to acknowledge speaking coach Jane Atkinson for inspiring me to evolve (and simplify) my thinking.
Here is a brief summary of the original Gumption (Gumption 1.0 or Movie Gumption) and some background into my thinking about this change.
Movie Gumption was created starting from the perspective of the movie Forrest Gump. It specifically used the Life Lessons from the movie as its focal point.
Real Life Gumption was created from the perspective of my clients and audiences. Real Life Gumption was designed to specifically answer the question, “How do I bring real value to my clients.” Note the shift in focus from the movie to my clients.
Movie Gumption had seven main points. Those seven points were divided into two categories. Here is a diagram of the original Movie Gumption.
Category #1 was Forrest Gump’s three key personality traits:
- Integrity
- Presence
- Receptiveness
Category #2 was four areas of daily living:
- Choice
- Opportunities
- Adversity
- Communication
So, instead of seven points, there will only be three principles. Instead of two categories, there will only be one.
The reason for this simplification is hopefully obvious – it’s simpler!
Now, here is the beauty of this evolved thinking. Real Life Gumption is completely synchronous with Movie Gumption. All of the seven original points of Movie Gumption fit within each of the three principles of Real Life Gumption. I acknowledge that a few of the original seven points more closely align with a single principle. For example, Communication is directly related to Graciousness or how a person interacts with others. But, I’ll argue that communication is also a part of your thinking and most definitely a part of getting things done.
Over the next few weeks, I’ll explain this evolution of Gumption into a simpler, more helpful term and way of thinking, and show how this perspective can actively help all of us in our daily Real Life.
How’s your thinking?
How are you getting things done?
How are you interacting with others?
Hopefully, the answer to all three is, “With Gumption!”

I love the first 7 points … but I am looking forward to hearing more. One of the things I value most in your blog are the simple reminders about living a good life. As long as these remain, I will be a loyal reader!
Thanks Kathleen for your comment. The 7 original points will remain and will be the foundational stories for living a good life. My hope (and goal) is that 3 principles (instead of 7) will be more easily comprehended, remembered, and actionable by you (and others). I appreciate your loyal reading!
