A Work in Progress

Thursday, August 30th, 2012

House_Under_Construction

Like all human beings, I’m a work in progress.

I continue to learn, grow, and evolve.

My attitudes and beliefs become both more open-minded and resolute.

I know what I like and want in life … I also know that there are many things I don’t yet know and have not yet experienced.

There is much I still plan to accomplish.

I’m a work in progress.

Planning versus Figuring It out as You Go Along

Blueprints

My neighbor has started to build a house on his lot.

One of the funny things about living in Montana is there are no building plans required.

You do need to get a septic permit.
And your well needs to be registered with the state.
And an electrical permit needs to be obtained.
But there is no permitting for the foundation.
And an overall site plan is not necessary to start building.

Mark Twain said, So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

Here is the complete quote. Life is short, break the rules, forgive quickly, kiss slowly, love truly, laugh uncontrollably, and never regret anything that made you smile. Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

It occurs to me that I’ve spent a good portion of my life in the safety of the harbor.

The Things You Didn’t Do versus the Ones You Did

Forrest was not a spectator. Forrest was on the field, playing.

I wish I would have …
If only I had taken the opportunity to …
It was mine for the taking – why didn’t I just try and …?

These are the statements of regret.

Twain knew that fun was the key to living a fulfilled life.

“Forgive Quickly, Kiss Slowly, Love Truly”

Seems to me that learning to live in the moment is the secret.

When you fail to forgive, you’re holding on to something from your past.
When you don’t kiss slowly, you’re imagining that you’re somewhere else.
When you don’t truly love, you’re unwilling to be present.

Are you quick to forgive?
Are you kissing nice and slowly?
Are you truly loving your life? And others?

Life is short … In my case, I estimate I only have 25 to 35 more productive years.

I Wish I Looked Like Someone Famous

Thursday, August 9th, 2012

Meeting someone famous while pretending to be someone famous.

Meeting someone famous while pretending to be someone famous.

During my fifteen years as a Forrest Gump impersonator, I literally had a million-plus mini-conversations with individuals and small groups. One of the things people said over and over was: “I wish I looked like someone famous.”

They then went on to say something like:

  • “I’ll bet this is fun.”
  • “You look like you’re having a good time.”
  • “You’re lucky.”

The people were right. It was fun. I had a great time. And I was (and am) lucky.

But the looking like someone famous is a double-edged sword. Here’s why.

Do You Ever Dream About Who You’re Going To Be – (Part 2)

Monday, August 6th, 2012

When I sold my dream property, a vacuum formed – a big piece of my ‘why’ went missing.

When I sold my dream property, a vacuum formed – a big piece of my ‘why’ went missing.

Jenny: “Do you ever dream, Forrest, about who you’re going to be?”
Forrest: “Who I’m going to be? Aren’t I going to be me?”
Jenny: “You’ll always be you, just another kind of you.

Dreaming big is what has kept me going.
Dreaming of becoming another kind of me is what gets me fired up in the morning.
Dreaming of being someone new is what motivates me on a daily basis.
Dreaming big gets me through the grind.

What happens when reality and dreams collide?

How many different shoes have you worn during your lifetime?
How many different shoes are you currently wearing?
Is it time to throw away those shoes that no longer support the life you want to live?

I’m not talking about actual pairs of shoes … I’m referring to the different roles you’ve played in your life. And the different roles you’re currently living.
