Stories of Gumption – Bitterroot Brewfest Committee and Volunteers

Tuesday, July 31st, 2012

stories-of-gumption
Stories of Gumption is a regular column that profiles individuals who admirably demonstrate Gumption as we define it. These are the stories of real people who exhibit gumption in overcoming personal challenges, and validate the spirit of Gumption during their journey. Let’s take inspiration from those who seize 100% personal responsibility and show us how to live a life that exhibits Gump-like character traits worthy of applause!

Brewfest2012-07:28:12-C

Last Saturday was the 18th Annual Bitterroot Brewfest. It is the largest fundraiser of the year, benefitting the Bitterroot Chamber of Commerce. It is also the biggest outdoor summer party in Hamilton, Montana.

Proudly, this is the third year I’ve participated on the Brewfest Committee. It’s also the fifth year that I’ve attended. It keeps getting better and better.

Would it be OK if I brag a little bit about the event, the committee, and the dozens of volunteers who make the event possible?

Let’s Get Real-Real

Chart from page 97 of Gilmore and Pine’s 2007 book: Authenticity, What Consumers Really Want.

Chart from page 97 of Gilmore and Pine’s 2007 book: Authenticity, What Consumers Really Want.

Gilmore and Pine in their book Authenticity developed a 2×2 matrix that classifies all genres of economic offerings (i.e. commodity, good, service, experience, or transformation). Real and Fake are the vertical and horizontal markers. Each of the four modes of authenticity indicate a consumer’s perception of a product or business’ authenticity.

  • Real-fake – IS what is says it is and IS NOT true to itself.
  • Fake-fake – IS NOT what it says it is and IS NOT true to itself.
  • Fake-real – IS NOT what it says it is and IS true to itself.
  • Real-real – IS what it says it is and IS true to itself.

Over the past several years, I’ve wrestled with how I’m positioned in the speakers’ world. Am I a speaker? Or am I a Forrest Gump impersonator who speaks?

My blog of two weeks ago started the process of answering that question. I now feel confident in declaring myself a former Forrest Gump impersonator, or former look-like. While I still consider myself a Forrest Gump Tribute Artist – I mostly prefer to think of myself as a communicator and a creator of experiences. I communicate using both the written and spoken word. I create experiences by using my gump-like image combined with the words I speak. My purpose is to teach businesses and individuals to live a gump-like life … and specifically, to Function with Gumption.

That is my reality. That feels real. That’s how I will go forward.

Going forward, I’ll now be able to tell my story in conjunction with the wonderful story of Forrest Gump.

So why is being Real-real so important?

Sportsmanship and Honoring Traditions

Yesterday the Tour de France finished on the Champs-Élysées in Paris.

Like all sports, cycling has a book of official written rules. But cycling also has unwritten rules. These unwritten rules are about the sportsmanship of the competition. The unwritten rules honor the traditions of the sport. They are known and understood by the individual riders, the riders’ teams, and the event organizers. The unwritten rules are very much a part of the sportsmanship and traditions of the Tour de France.

Life also has unwritten rules that we all tend to follow.
Families have unwritten rules that they follow.
The workplace has unwritten rules that you are expected to follow.

To willingly follow the unwritten rules is to live with integrity.

Unwritten rules honor traditions and play the game (or live life) with sportsmanship.

I enjoy seeing good sportsmanship at the end of a tough competition.

Here are four examples of sportsmanship and the honoring of tradition from yesterday’s Tour de France final stage – and the corresponding life lessons.

Two Years, Two Months, and Two Days

Monday, July 16th, 2012

Walden_Thoreau

Henry David Thoreau lived in his small cabin on Walden Pond for two years, two months, and two days. He called this time an “experiment in living.” His goal was to find a simpler, more honest, and purer life. Walden, published in 1854, was the written legacy and manifesto that resulted from those two years, two months, and two days.

Two years, two months, and two days ago I moved from living in a small town to country living. Unlike Thoreau, I didn’t move to find a simpler, more honest, and purer life — I moved because economically it made sense. I couldn’t afford to live in the house in town. I moved because I felt I had no choice. I moved reluctantly.

Two years, two months, and two days later, it was the best thing I could have done. My life is now simpler, more honest, and purer.

Sometimes we do things because we feel like we don’t have any other option.
Sometimes we aren’t smart (wise) enough to see the future benefit of that action.
Sometimes our reluctant actions pleasantly surprise us.

I knew within six to nine months that I had made a good choice.
Seeing the silver lining didn’t take me two years, two months, and two days.

Nevertheless, I’m grateful for the example Thoreau set almost one hundred and sixty years ago.

My life is now simpler, more honest, and more pure.

Balancing Steve and Forrest

Thursday, July 12th, 2012

What is right balance between Steve, Gumption, and ‘Forrest’?

What is right balance between Steve, Gumption, and ‘Forrest’?

I was a Forrest Gump impersonator.

I worked for Bubba Gump Shrimp Company from March 1996 until February 2011 – one month shy of fifteen years.

Today I’m part speaker, communicator, conference host, and entertainer. Companies and associations hire me to help their employees and members discover their individual greatness. Individuals take inspiration from Forrest Gump and my message of Gumption.

Balancing the amount of Steve, the amount of Gumption, and the amount of Forrest has been a challenge. What is the right amount? How much of each do I give?

Bubba’s Legacy

Benjamin Buford Blue (1943 – 1968)

Benjamin Buford Blue (1943 – 1968)

Bubba had a dream.
Bubba wanted to be a shrimp boat caption.
Bubba died before he could realize his dream.

Forrest picked up Bubba’s dream and ran with it.

Lt. Dan’s life changed when he joined Forrest in the shrimpin’ business.

Forrest and Lt. Dan succeeded in the shrimpin’ business.

Bubba’s Mom’s life changed because of Forrest and Lt. Dan’s success.

Forrest’s wealth allowed him to do things and affect the lives of others that otherwise would not have been possible.

Jenny and Little Forrest benefited from Forrest’s generosity and unconditional love.

Bubba had a dream.
Bubba’s dream was never personally realized.

Bubba’s dream affected many lives.
That was Bubba’s legacy.

What’s your dream?
Are you dreaming big?
Are you willing to dream big enough to leave a legacy?

‘Live on Purpose’ Radio Interview

Friday, July 6th, 2012

Live_On_Purpose_Radio

Last Monday, I did a 30-minute radio interview with Dr. Paul Jenkins. Dr. Paul and I are colleagues in the National Speakers Association Mountain West Chapter.

Live on Purpose radio is all about showing up every day and living life on purpose. Living life on purpose means you have a purpose and you live that purpose intentionally.

It occurs to me that Live on Purpose is closely related to Live a gump-like Life and fully compatible with Gumption’s three principles.

Dr. Paul opens this show by saying he is promoting phenomenal prosperity through pathological positivity. Now, I’m not a smart man … but that is a lot of P’s. And at the 21:30 mark, Dr. Paul continues his P alliterations with pandemic of pessimism to describe the funk that sometimes overwhelms individuals and companies.

I wonder if Dr. Paul’s dictionary has an extra-thick P section?

Listen here to Dr. Paul and me as we analyze the relationship between Forrest Gump, Gumption, and Living on Purpose.

Are You Getting Paid Your Worth?

Monday, July 2nd, 2012

Forrest went from not getting paid to being a gazillionaire – all it took was lots of hard work.

Forrest went from not getting paid to being a gazillionaire – all it took was lots of hard work.

Last week while participating in a corporate conference, I heard another speaker say, “This business will never will pay you what you’re worth.”

Needless to say, that statement caught my attention and I listened carefully.

She went on to explain, “At the beginning, the amount you earn will not nearly equal the effort that must be put in … And then after a while, you’ll get paid a lot more than the effort you put in.” So … you’ll never get paid what you’re worth.

This is true for almost every entrepreneurial endeavor. And just the opposite is true when you take ‘a job.’
